Eight places to begin

Places worth finding

These are selected from the district location reference, with private campaign material withheld.

MRK-01

Moonlight Pawn & Curio

Moonlight Pawn & Curio is a narrow, deep shop packed with jewelry, tools, radios, cameras, instruments, old weapons, clocks, charms, photographs and objects whose purpose is less obvious. It is a staple of Grimmstone and a reliable place to turn possessions into cash, cash into possessions, or questions into better questions.

MRK-02

Old Market Hall

Old Market Hall is a vast iron-and-glass market building filled with permanent counters and rotating stalls. It is the district’s daytime and nighttime commercial anchor.

MRK-03

Hallow Miracles

Hallow Miracles is the Hallow family’s neighborhood occult shop: practical, bookish and lived-in rather than theatrical. Shelves carry magical references, household wards, charms, ritual supplies and the sort of strange miscellany accumulated by a family that has been in the trade for years.

MRK-04

The Crooked Scale

The Crooked Scale buys and sells furniture, jewelry, paintings, silverware and estate goods. Its windows look expensive; its back rooms look like history lost an argument.

MRK-05

Lantern Street Produce

Lantern Street Produce is a family grocer spilling crates of fruit and vegetables onto the sidewalk beneath striped awnings. It supplies households, restaurants and elderly residents throughout Old Market.

MRK-06

Needle & Knot

Needle & Knot is a crowded tailoring and repair shop serving ordinary clothing, uniforms, costumes and species-specific alterations.

MRK-07

The Brass Kettle

The Brass Kettle is a narrow tea house with mismatched furniture, brass pots and shelves of teas from across Grimmstone and beyond.

MRK-08

Morrow & Sons Books

Morrow & Sons is a sprawling used bookstore with leaning shelves, rolling ladders and boxes of maps, magazines, pamphlets and forgotten manuals.

The people who keep the district moving

Five organizations to know

Public reputations only. The archivist has been instructed not to publish confidential correspondence again.

MRK-F01

The Old Market Merchants' Guild

The Guild began as a practical pact between merchants tired of thieves, arbitrary taxes, and supernatural bargains spilling into neighboring stalls. Over generations its customs became Old Market's unwritten constitution. Grimmstone has never removed it because whenever officials try to govern the Market directly, merchants simply stop cooperating and the district becomes impossible to supply.

MRK-F02

The Night Auction

The Night Auction began when collectors needed a neutral place to sell artifacts too dangerous, embarrassing, illegal, or strange for ordinary storefronts. Its reputation rests on strict auction neutrality: provenance may be questionable, but bids and payments are sacred.

MRK-F03

The Brass Scales

Old Market needed people trusted by rivals to answer one dangerous question: what is this actually worth? The Brass Scales grew from weights-and-measures inspectors into experts on provenance, curses, sentimental value, magical cost, and contractual fairness.

MRK-F04

The Ragpickers

The Ragpickers began with people surviving by finding what others discarded. Grimmstone rewards that skill unusually well: yesterday's trash can be an antique from another decade, a cursed relic, or a key to a vanished building. They became organized to protect salvage claims and warn one another about dangerous finds.

MRK-F05

The Crooked Keys

The Crooked Keys grew from locksmiths willing to make copies without questions. They became Grimmstone's specialists in acquisition: burglary, safecracking, bypassing wards, and fencing objects whose owners were not selling.
